Founded in 2003, Catalyst Biosciences, Inc. is a leading biotechnology company focused on developing proteases as a therapeutic platform for hemophilia, age-related macular degeneration, and inflammation. Proteases are well established as a class of drugs, with more than 7 protease drugs on the market generating over $4 billion in annual sales. Catalyst is developing and intends to market both natural and engineered human proteases ("Alterase™ therapeutics") to treat major diseases. By engineering human proteases to alter their substrate specificity so that they can inactivate any given protein target, Catalyst will vastly increase the use and application for therapeutic proteases, and create a new paradigm in target intervention. Catalyst has signed research, development and commercialization partnerships with several leading biologics companies, including a $500 million collaboration with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for the discovery, development and commercialization of Factor VIIa products to treat hemophilia and other bleeding conditions, announced in June 2009, and a $195 million collaboration with MedImmune, LLC, for the discovery, development and commercialization of Alterase therapeutics to treat inflammatory disease, announced in July 2009.
