Catalyst Biosciences(profile...)

Position:   Sr. Research Associate/Scientist I, Automation and High Throughput Screening (#RB10-114)
Description:

Catalyst Biosciences is a drug discovery and development company that is creating novel catalytic biopharmaceutical products based on engineered human proteases. Our mission is to establish protease therapeutics as a new therapeutic platform comparable in depth and scope to antibody pharmaceuticals. The Company is developing proteases for the treatment of a broad range of diseases with a strong focus on hemostasis and inflammation. Proteases are well established as a class of drugs, with more than 7 protease drugs on the market that generate over $4 billion in annual sales. Catalyst is developing both natural and engineered human proteases ("Alterase Therapeutics") to treat major diseases.

The Companys product discovery platform is based on methods to rapidly create and characterize tailor-made protease drug candidates, called Alterase Therapeutics, that cleave disease-causing proteins or improve the biochemical and pharmacological properties of marketed protease drugs. Catalyst Biosciences has clearly demonstrated the advantages of protease therapeutics for important classes of disease targets in both in vivo animal studies and ex vivo human studies.

By engineering human proteases to alter their substrate specificity so that they can inactivate any given protein target or improve the pharmaceutical properties of marketed protease drugs, Catalyst Biosciences will vastly increase the use and application for therapeutic proteases, and create a new paradigm in target intervention. The Company believes that the ability to target soluble or cell surface proteins involved in disease via an Alterase represents a significant opportunity for drug development. The Company has assembled a team of world-class scientists and advisors, strong corporate partners, an enabling technology platform, and a robust pipeline, and is thus poised to become a fully integrated biopharmaceutical company with a diversified portfolio.
We are seeking talented, motivated individuals who will thrive in our highly productive, results-oriented, and collaborative culture. The primary responsibilities of this Sr. Research Associate/ Scientist I will include the automation of screening assays in support of Catalyst’s therapeutic Alterase platform. This position requires hands-on experience in programming automated work cells, transitioning assays from the bench to walk-away automation, and operating and QC’ing automation equipment. The candidate must be an innovative, self-motivated, team player with strong communication and organizational skills who thrives in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment.
Requirements:
• B.S/M.S in biological sciences with at least 4-6 years experience or Ph.D. with 0-2 years of experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology organizations
• Specific experience in the transfer of biochemical assays from the bench to automated platforms including programming work cells (e.g. SAMI, Overlord, Janus WinPREP, etc.) for walk-away automation
• Solid understanding of modern high throughput screening assay technologies including experience using and QC’ing laboratory automation equipment in a biotech environment
• Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills
• Excellent computer skills in Excel and Powerpoint
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, innovative environment
Preference given to candidates with:
• Experience in use of data analysis software such as Activity Base
• Familiarity with multiple screening assay formats (e.g. absorbance, fluorescence, FP, HTRF and Alphascreen)
